Queen Pawn Openings: Queen Pawn Game and the Colle System

There are other options open to players when looking into Queen Pawn openings and the many variations associated with them. The Queen Pawn game is worth looking into when one desires to consider the possibility of not playing a gambit as one of the chess openings of choice. This simply means that after playing 1 P - Q4, P - Q4, White's next move should not be 2 P - QB4 making a marked difference from a Queen's Gambit opening.

We would also like to point out that there is no rule against White's playing a P - QB4. That is true for the most part when chess principles concerning the Queen Pawn Game do not go directly against the ones for the Queen's Gambit.

The only word of warning we have for players is that when White defers bringing the Pawn to QB4 position, Black can equalize the situation easily. This would simply mean that Black would have quite an easy time during the opening moves in a game of chess. But Black should not be over complacent if White delays playing P - QB4 since any time, if opportunity arises, White can bring that Pawn forward and cause problems.

If one wishes to continue with a Queen Pawn Game then that player should seriously consider continuing into the Colle System. This is in effect as follows: 1 P - Q4, P - Q4; 2 Kt - KB3, Kt - KB3; 3 P - K3, P - B4; 4 P - B3. The Colle System appears as one of the most promising options for White when considering the said opening.

Turning our attention to Black's side, the fastest and most obvious method of countering White would be to develop rapidly and prepare to make ... P - K4 pretty soon. Another question that Black should address is how to position the Knight on the Queen's side. The two viable options for that Knight are QB3 and Q2. One tip is that QB3 does look natural, since players may be well used to it, but when considering the Queen Pawn Game, the QB3 position is inferior to the latter.

We may need to ask if both players stick to well-established principles when playing this opening, who will gain the upper hand in the early part of the game? Players should not be surprised when they find out that White does gain the upper though one can say it will be a slight one. The reason behind White's advantage is the extra move since White does make the first move.

When playing the Queen Pawn Game, players should consider the Colle System. This is one of the chess openings where both sides are relatively equal with White gaining the usual slight advantage.
